Periodontics

Periodontics is a branch of dentistry that focuses on the structures surrounding and supporting the teeth. A common concern in this branch is treating Periodontal Disease, which affects the gums and threatens the mouth’s structure.

What is Periodontal Gum Disease?

In short, Periodontal Disease is an infection of the gums caused by a buildup of plaque on the teeth that releases toxins and causes the gums to become swollen, and bleed easily. Gingivitis is the mild case of this gum disease, and doctors can usually treat it easily. However, Periodontis is more advance than Gingivitis and is what the gum disease progresses to if left untreated. With Periodontis, the gum infection becomes a great deal more severe and invades below the gum line. As a result, this will create a reaction in which the body will start to break down the tissue and bone that support the teeth. Which then causes the gums to pull away, pockets of gum infection to form, and may ultimately result in needing a surgical procedure to control the infection.
