Gum Disease Treatment

Periodontal gum disease treatment is determined by the severity of each particular case. Once we have performed a thorough periodontal exam, a treatment plan can be put into place to control the infection and fight against gum disease progression. Early detection of gum disease is important and success certainly will depend on several factors including upkeep at home. Even more, the American Dental Association recommends that people with gum disease visit their dentist 3-4 times per year for periodontal maintenance.

Types of Gum Disease Treatment

  • Scaling and Root Planing. This is an essential deep cleaning procedure. First, the hygienist will scrape the plaque off above and below the gum line (scaling). Then, they will remove the tough spots and bacteria on the root (root planing).
  • Antibiotics. Often in addition to the scaling and root planing procedure, the dentist will be administer a special gum disease antibiotic such as an antimicrobial mouth rinse, antibiotic gel or oral antibiotics. These antibiotics fight against the gum infection just as you would take an antibiotic to fight against any other infection.
  • Surgical Treatment. If gum disease progresses to its more severe state, the doctor may recommend a surgical procedure. There are two general procedures to choose from. First, the most common surgical procedure is a Flap surgery. In which the gums are lifted to remove tartar and then sutured back in place. The second surgical option is bone and tissue grafts, which regenerate lost tissue and bone. Both surgical options are safe, and your doctor will discuss in detail your particular treatment.
